Best LinkedIn Connection Request Message Templates

Best LinkedIn Connection Request Message Templates

Connection Request Messages portray your way of networking and doing business on LinkedIn and in life. The second “first impression” forms once the lead goes ahead and checks out your LinkedIn profile. Unless it’s neat, there’s no Connection Request Message that could save the opportunity you’ve just wasted. That also goes the other way around. You might have a perfectly optimized LinkedIn profile, but a generic and irrelevant Connection Request Message significantly lowers your chances of getting accepted.

Why does this matter? Namely, 98% of sales representatives with more than 5,000 LinkedIn connections mostly surpass their selling quotas. Read that again. So, what do you think, how much effort these sales representatives put into their Connection Request Messages? That’s right. Just like in real life, knowing people and establishing positive business relationships matter. And on LinkedIn, they all start with a well-thought Connection Request Message.

That’s why we’ve prepared for you:

  • How to send/cancel a Connection Request Message on LinkedIn;
  • Top dos and don’ts when sending Connection Request Messages;
  • Best LinkedIn Connection Request Messages templates for 12 different scenarios that will improve your acceptance rate.

How to send/cancel a Connection Request Message on LinkedIn

The right approach brings the right outcome

First things first, let’s talk about different types of LinkedIn connections.

  • 1st-degree connections are LinkedIn users already part of your network. You can communicate through LinkedIn messages.
  • 2nd-degree connections are LinkedIn members connected with your 1st-degree connections.
  • 3rd-degree connections are LinkedIn members connected with your 2nd-degree connections.

You can send Connection Request Messages to your 2nd and 3rd-degree connections. However, LinkedIn gives you an extra option of approaching members, and it is via LinkedIn InMail. There are two types of LinkedIn InMails – free and paid. You can send LinkedIn free InMails only to members who set their LinkedIn status to “Open to InMails”. You can send a paid InMail to any LinkedIn member. The number of the available paid InMails depends on your LinkedIn plan.

If you are not familiar with what these are, how to use them, how many of them are included in your plan, check out Steve’s video blog on the subject where you can find everything you need.

How to send a LinkedIn Connection Request Message

Assuming that you’ve already “handpicked” your leads, there are two ways to send a Connection Request Message.

In the right corner of their LinkedIn profile, click “Connect”.

OR

Open the LinkedIn user’s profile. Click “Connect”.

How to cancel a pending LinkedIn Connection Request Message

In case you’ve sent a Connection Request Message to a user, and you’ve changed your mind for whatever reason, there is a way out.

Click “My network” on your LinkedIn profile.

Choose “Manage”.

Then “Sent” and “Withdraw” next to the person’s name.

If you cancel a Connection Request Message on LinkedIn, you won’t be able to send it again to the same person for the following 3 weeks.

Connection Request Messages: Top DOS and DON’TS

Following certain common-sense rules when sending Connection Request Messages on LinkedIn not only improves your acceptance rates but saves you from ending up in LinkedIn jail. Namely, it takes only a few people to deny your Connection Request and click “I don’t know this person” to be flagged on LinkedIn.

Therefore, since common sense is not that common, here are the top 10 dos and don’ts you should take into account when coming up with those 300 characters of a LinkedIn Connection Request Message. By the way, in case you are using Skylead for your outreach, the number of characters is limited to 250. This way we make sure once Skylead replaces placeholders with real information, the total number of characters doesn’t surpass 300.

Top 5 DOS

  • Personalize your Connection Request Messages to clearly show why you want to connect exactly with them;
  • Write a compelling copy to catch their attention;
  • Include a hook or call-to-action so you could continue the conversation from where you left off once you’ve been accepted;
  • Briefly introduce yourself if there’s room for it;
  • Be polite and professional.

Top 5 DON’TS

  • Don’t send generic or blank Connection Request Messages;
  • Avoid making personal references or giving compliments that are not business-related or argued;
  • Don’t talk only about yourself and your experience or, even worse, start Connection Request Messages exclusively in that manner;
  • Avoid selling straight out the gate;
  • Don’t send irrelevant Connection Request Messages (a pharmaceutical sales representative is hard to be interested to read your article on SEO optimization). Namely, make sure you know who you’ve targeted and who you are talking to.
