Goodbye message
A goodbye message is the final touchpoint in a cold outreach or follow-up sequence, sent after multiple attempts to connect have gone unanswered. Its purpose is to gracefully close the loop while leaving the door open for future communication.
It acknowledges the lack of response without guilt-tripping the prospect and often invites them to reach out if or when the timing is better.
Common elements include:
- A polite sign-off (e.g., “closing the loop”, “stepping back”)
- A light reminder of the value you offer
- Optional CTA or open-ended offer to reconnect later
- Friendly tone, sometimes even humor or humility
Goodbye messages are sometimes called breakup emails, though the tone can vary from casual and friendly to direct and final. When done well, they often get the highest reply rates of the entire sequence.
Example:
‘’Since I haven’t heard back, I’ll assume now’s not the right time. If it ever makes sense to reconnect, feel free to reach out.’’
